Article Project: what kind of project do you want to do?

We could have a few different groups of people and separate them in different lighted areas while they take our color poll. For example, we could have a group of 5 people outside in the natural sunlight taking our color poll; and we could have another group in a darkly lit room and another group in a fluorescent lit room and see if light plays a big roll in the effect of a color effecting the mood. We could also separate our groups into different genders and age groups. I would like to do a similar study as they did in my article. I am not sure of any other way we could get data other than polling people.

This relates to the article because my group members and I would probably do the same study these people did in the article, just simpler and smaller. Statistics is the type of math that would be involved in our study. There will be graphs showing how different colors invoke different emotions on our participants.

rhondacampbell:

That is the jest of our article.  They can change the variables to suit their findings.  And a lot of the findings are unreliable.

Crime Rate Puzzle

By: Radley Balko

In this article the author Balco points out ” The more criminals we incarcerate you would think the crime rate would decrease. But in turn

Steve Messner a criminologist at the University of Missouri in St Louis. State in a series of studies…

So… states with a lower incarceration rate saw a decline in crime, was this due to other programs, rehabilitation, etc.?  Sounds like they think the variables were perhaps tampered with to make the stats sound like facts? Just wondering?.

Wait and see our project and you’ll find out :P

hmmm that sounds very interesting! i cant wait to hear what you find. It could sound logical that the lower the incarceration rate the lower the crime rate but that might be a little too good to be true

Wow„ those numbers are crazy! I knew the rates were high because I can just see it here in our small community. But when you put the math to it “blows my mind away” very thankful I was smart enough not to get involved in alchol or drugs myself.

Working Partners for an Alcohol- and Drug-Free Workplace

In 2007, an estimated 19.9 million Americans were current drug users. About 8% are still addicts today. There are 23.3% of the population age 12 and over that are binge drinkers and 6.9% are heavy drinkers. Among adults age 50-59 were 2.7%…

~Sarah that’s crazy… I never thought the numbers would be THAT bad.

That’s really really sad to see those huge numbers. You never know about anyone now a days…

Oh Sarah I hate fractions. But I did figure out someyhing that made it a little easier. I figured out that as I do the problem I was thinking of the numbers that are there not the place. i would think of it as the 5 times the7 or what ever now I think of it as like the numerator times or whatever…

Oh my gosh Sarah I feel the exact same way! I’m fresh out of high school too I should know all this stuff too but you know sometimes its not our fault some teachers are really bad or its hard to learn so don’t beat yourself up!

What has been the most difficult topic sofar ? why ?

campbell4264:

The most difficult thing so far is that I for got how to do the math on price of an item verses ounces and circumfrences for a circles.

I am always forgetting how to do things when it comes to math. its difficult to remember everything..thank goodness for notes!

1.What has been the most difficult so far ? Why?
As far as right now… Division multiple families !! It’s driving me crazy!! I’m not happy with math right now…

you just have to remember the 1 goes in the bottom left the multabale goes in top left and the diviser goes in the empty box on the right bottom.

Yeah those are confusing! math is hard and its even worse when you’re frustrated. maybe you’re trying too hard thats what happens to me when I think about it too much

The Red, White and Blues of Emotion:

Examining color hue effects on mood tones

April S. Oden and Shannon S. Sholtz

From the Department of Psychology at the Missouri Western State University, performed a study to see if different colors actually change a person’s mood. They took 60 psychology students and gave them four pieces of paper. The first paper had questions to evaluate them to see if they were good candidates for the study. The other 3 pieces of paper each had the 3 primary colors in light and dark shades, with a scale of 1-10 and boxes labeled calm, exciting and cheerful. The students were to mark what particular feeling the color gave them and to what degree. They collected and tallied the surveys. In conclusion, they found that lighter primary colors give a more calming effect and brighter colors give a more exciting effect. The different primary colors also gave them a different reactions related to being cheerful calm and exciting.

rhondacampbell:

I agree, I have alot of time I could use and I try to,but I can always think of something else to do.

tabethamarquez:

I do not know how how much time I have spent on ilearn. Im sure I probally do not spend enough time on there.

I don’t think i spend enough time either but it makes me soo bored i just don’t like math AT ALL
